FIONA COOPER FENWICK
A Brief Biography
Fiona Cooper Fenwick is a landscape and still life painter in the Impressionist tradition – working primarily in oil. Fiona grew up in Upstate New York, the youngest of four children. She attended Bennington College in Vermont, and graduated in 1980 with a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Art. In 1982, Fiona moved to northern Vermont, making a full commitment to painting in 1990. Fueled by the New England landscape, as well as fine mentors along the way, she continues to pursue her own artistic goals – painting color, light, atmosphere and composition – and focusing on the balance of these elements in nature and art. Though she primarily paints
"en plein-air", the studio is where she often develops her plein air paintings when not completed on site. The studiois also where she creates additional paintings that push beyond the “on-site” experience.
Recently, Fiona has been working to create paintings that are not only evocative of place, but that also clearly tell a story of paint on canvas. Working more boldly with the paint brush and the palette knife, Fiona has embarked on a painting adventure where surface texture and paint application become an integral part of the story being told. Two years in, she has found that this has allowed her to push color, contrast, and abstraction in both her plein air and studio work. Palette knife over brushwork and brushwork over palette knife - each have a voice in her newest work. Finding the order in nature's chaos, or finding the chaos within the nature of order is a new dynamic that fuels her thinking and approach to each painting.
Fiona’s paintings have appeared in numerous publications over the past three decades. She shows her work regionally in solo and group exhibitions, and has sold her paintings to clients residing throughout the United States. She lives in Hinesburg, Vermont with her husband and two cats.
